Botanical Name: Nepeta cataria

Native To: Europe, now widely cultivated.

Fun Fact: Members of the Iowa State University Department of Entomology presented the results of a study on common catnip. Among their conclusions was the fact that an essential oil in catnip is 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than potent chemicals such as DEET

Process: Steam distillation of leaves and flowers

Blends Well With: grapefruit, eucalyptus, and rosemary

Catnip Pure Essential Oil Uses

  • Insect repellant recipe:
    * 1.0ml Catnip Oil
    * 1.5ml Geranium Oil
    * 1.5ml Citronella
    * 10 drops of Tween (used to keep oil and water from separating)
    Combine in a 1 oz bottle. Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water.

    Keep a bottle with your camping and picnic supplies. Shake gently before each use.
